GEORGE TOWN: Police will invoke the Internal Security Act (ISA) against those who are found spreading rumours, including via SMS, which can affect public order in the state.
This includes an alleged illegal gathering at the State Mosque planned for today.
Acting state police chief Datuk Salleh Mat Rasid said police had received two reports on such rumours and were investigating the source of the messages.
He said the ISA could also be invoked against those who kept such SMS.
"I want to stress that there is no such thing (the illegal gathering) and that safety and security in the state is under control," he said yesterday.
SMSes are being circulated that there would be a gathering today at the State Mosque to protest the newly-formed DAP-PKR state government.
Salleh said anyone with information on the illegal gathering should inform police.
"We are asking the people to co-operate. If you receive the SMS, delete it immediately," he said, adding that police did not receive any application to conduct the gathering.
He said the only celebration to be held today was the state-level Maulidur Rasul at the Seberang Jaya mosque and the Masjid Kapitan Keling mosque.
The celebration will begin at 7.45am and 3.30pm respectively, and will be watched by about 200 policemen.
Earlier, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng urged the people to ignore rumours about the illegal gathering.
"The rumours are baseless. I want to stress that everything is in order and people should carry on with their lives." - NST
